During this class, you'll be creating a web site. You'll need to place this website on a web server. In order to do that, you'll need to find a web hosting service.

What does web hosting mean?

When you create web pages, you'll save specially formatted text files along with graphic, sound or multimedia files on your hard drive. At this point, you can see these files but nobody else can. In order for others to see your pages, you'll need to place them on a Web Server.

A web hosting service is one that allows you a certain amount of space on their web server where you can place your web pages and support files. Generally 5 megs of space is sufficient.

What kinds of hosting services are there?

There are both free and fee based hosting services. For this class, you'll probably want to find a free service. Here are some possibilities: The advantage to these options is that they are free of charge. The disadvantage is that ads will appear along with your page. Thus far I believe that Yahoo/Geocities are the least obtrusive.

There are also paid web hosting services. They often offer you more space and access to cgi and advanced web programming languages/tools. Prices can range from around $5 a month to hundreds of dollars a month depending upon what your needs are. Here are a few examples:
If you don't already have a web hosting service, we'd strongly recommend signing up at Yahoo/Geocities. To do so, visit: http://www.geocities.com

If you already have a Yahoo mail or Yahoo groups ID, use that to sign in. If you don't, please create an account by clicking "Sign Up" and providing the necessary information. We'll be creating our HTML pages in a text editor then using the File Manager and Easy Upload to transfer them to your Geocities web space during this class. We won't be using Geocities page wizards or page builder.

You'll get much more detailed information about the upload process during weeks 2 and 3 of the class. All you need to worry about doing now is creating your account.
