Course Description

An Introduction to HTML and Website Design. Students will learn both the mechanics and aesthetics of good web design. Topics include basic HTML, Working with text and graphics, adding multimedia elements, and controlling page layout with tables or frames. Intermediate topics including Cascading Style Sheets, forms and utilizing JavaScripts will be discussed. Students will find a free web host and will publish a website as a final project. This class is designed for the beginner. Access to a computer with an internet connection is essential.


Course objectives

By the end of this class, students will be able to:
  1. Understand the relationship between a web browser, web pages, domain names, the internet, and their computer
  2. Distinguish between good and bad web design
  3. Create web pages using HTML and a text editor
  4. Create, locate, and manipulate graphics for use on web pages
  5. Utilize various web search tools to locate resources they need for their web project
  6. Create a website as described in 'Project Descriptions' and publish that site to the web
  7. Identify multiple means of publicizing their web site
  8. Create a plan that addresses important Web Security issues
  9. Use WebCT to communicate effectively and comfortably in our online classroom

Emphasis of Five Themes

The curriculum at Hawaii Pacific University is designed to provide an integrated approach to learning which introduces students to five broad intellectual themes and issues. This class will emphasize all five of these themes: communications skills, global systems, world cultures, values and choices, and research and epistemology.

Students will develop writing and communication skills in creating the website project required in the class. Studends will be introduced to new web search skills and the appropriate methods of citing resources used in web pages. Students will discuss values and choices in context of copyright and intellectual property laws. Students will gain an understanding of the global nature of the web specifically and of the Internet in general.

Course Structure

This class will be comprised of short audio lectures, tutorials, articles and readings from our text. There will be weekly assignments and bulletin board discussions to take part in. There will be a short midterm quiz and a final project as described in the 'Project Description' below.

Your Commitment to this class: Please plan to log into this class daily or almost daily. First, look at the Class Calendar for readings, tutorials or assignments. Next, check the Bulletin Board discussion topics. Most of our interaction will happen there. If you log in and do a little bit daily, you'll find the class is fun and interesting. If you wait until a few minutes before a due date, you'll find it much less fun and rather stressful.

My Commitment to this class: I will respond to everything you do in this class. Expect to have email and bulletin board posts answered or acknowledged within 24 hours. Expect all assignments to be graded within 24 hours. You'll find a much faster turnaround most of the time.

Grading Policies

Your final course grade will be based upon the following:

Class Participation 40pts
Weekly Assignments* 140pts
Midterm Quiz 40pts
Web Page Creation Project 80pts
Total 300 pts
*Weekly assignments are worth 10 points each. 10 x 14 weeks = 140.

Class Participation

There are 40 points available for class participation. These can mean the difference of a full letter grade. Points are based upon participation in our Bulletin Board discussions. Interactivity is key and you can make this a much more interesting class by participating in this way.

Letter grades for the course will be based upon the following scale:

A270-300 points
B240-269 points
C210-239 points
D180-209 points
F   0-179 points

Late or missing assignmets:

If you find you have an emergency that prevents you from turning in an assignment on time, please notify the instructor prior to the due date to avoid losing points. Assignments will lose 5 points for each week they are late. The Website Project will lose 2 points for each day it is late.


Web Project Description

Here are the minimum requirements for your Web site. Your Web site needs to be up and available to look at on or before 11:59pm HST on DUE DATE HERE. You will lose two points for every day it is late after that. You should begin working on your website as soon as we've completed Conference Three. Please do not wait until the last minute.

If you want to post it sooner and notify me by email that it is up and ready for review you can do that. I will review it, let you know what I think, and then you can make any corrections if necessary by the due date.

You will be asked to publish your site to your free web hosting space that you setup at the start of this class.

Your site will be made up of at least six pages. The site must be created using a text editor and your knowledge of HTML tags. The site should not be created in an authoring tool such as Microsoft Word or FrontPage.

PAGE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Your main page must have a link to your other pages
  • All other pages must have a link back to your main page
  • Each page must have a title (using the HTML title tags)
  • Each page must have an appropriate background color or graphic
